As a fifth and sixth grade teacher, I developed a health curriculum that was integrated into my teaching throughout the year. One element of that curriculum was the Our Whole Lives series published by the Unitarian Universalists. It is a really thoughtfully written and balanced set of lessons. Much of the reading I have done about child development, health, sexuality, gender, identity development, and other related topics points to a very early start date of body and self image as well as ways of interacting with others.
With that in mind, I went and got the K-1 section of the curriculum. I hope to read through it and have digested it enough to create a small group of parents with kids the same age as my daughter who are interested in proactively addressing these topics in developmentally appropriate ways with their children. I would love to have a circle of friends who share their ideas and values in a non-judgmental way and who travel this path together.
